The organic cotton message has been going out to students over the course of two events organised by Fashioning An Ethical Industry (FEI) – a Labour Behind the Label project that aims to help create a more sustainable garment industry by reaching the designers of tomorrow.
The first, Fashion Victims, held on 26 February was an event geared at teaching 14-18 year olds and their teachers from around the South West about organic textiles, fair trade and garment workers' rights through a day-long programme of interactive workshops.
Providing a rare opportunity for young people to hear from someone involved in organic cotton production, the PAN-UK team were accompanied by a very special visitor: Dr. Davo Vodouhe, who runs OBEPAB, the organic cotton producers association of Benin, west Africa.
Davo addressed the 50 plus students who had gathered at the University of West England, telling them about the lives, struggles and passions of the cotton farmers he works with and how much organic cotton had offered them a chance not only to earn more money but to protect the health of themselves and their children.
The FEI conference was the second and here during the market place held on 3 March, the PAN UK stall attracted fashion educators and design students from across the continent and indeed the world. Among them, the ladies from Social Alterations in Hong Kong who were keen to hear more about lives behind one of the world’s best loved fabrics.
As well as giving out information about organic cotton, both events were a fantastic opportunity to talk about the various other crops that organic cotton farmers grow that not only provide them with a more varied diet but also give them greater financial stability.
