My 10 year old Bichon Frise dog Mumpkin has recently suffered a complete collapse due to Frontline Spot-on. I am trying to find evidence of other dogs having suffered similar reactions to the active ingredient Fipronil and wondered if you could help me. I already know of one Border Terrier who had similar problems about a year ago. |
Fipronil acts on the central nervous system of insects, and to an extent, in vertebrates as well, though more weakly. It is classified as ‘moderately toxic’, and a possible human carcinogen.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) monitors all adverse reactions to veterinary medicines, in both animals and people, and stresses that all suspected adverse reactions should be reported to them. A recent caller, Elizabeth, would be very interested to hear from anyone who has had any success in persuading their council to change their policy on spraying weedkiller on parks, pavements, playgrounds etc. Elizabeth’s asthma has been exacerbated since contractors sprayed her street, and she is trying to muster local support to lobby the council. This is a common enquiry at PAN UK. Local Authorities often assume that residents want tidy, weed-free streets, so in theory if enough people indicate to the contrary they may reconsider. We do know of one person who has managed to stop spraying in her street and child’s school by undertaking to do the weeding herself; however, this is obviously not a practical solution for everyone. If anyone has any experience or advice on tackling the council we would love to hear from you. |
