Fleas: Least-Toxic Control

Fleas are often brought in by cats and dogs but can also migrate from birds nests. See our factsheet on flea control for more information.

Physical controls

q       Fleas usually breed in pet bedding so preventative measure includes washing their bedding weekly. 

q       Flea combs - comb your pet several times a week during the summer season using a fine-toothed metal comb.

q       Vacuum carpets using a cleaner with strong suction.

q       Diatomaceous earth can be placed in dead spaces e.g. under skirting boards. Wear a dust mask when applying it.

Least-toxic chemical controls

q       Pennyroyal, eucalyptus, citronella, citrus peel can be used to make drops or sprays but cats can be very sensitive to some essential oils
