The two pilot projects were conducted in Togo and Tanzania respectively.
The specific objectives of the project, achieved by close cooperation between NGOs and DNAs, were:
- to develop a commonly agreed tool and strategy for data collection that is consistent with identifying the problems caused by severely hazardous pesticide formulations under conditions of use in developing countries
- to agree criteria and jointly identify potential communities to carry out the self-surveillance (e.g. areas of high pesticide usage, cropping systems known to be using hazardous pesticides)
- to hold a national workshop/seminar or joint meeting or meetings as appropriate with relevant ministries (health, agriculture, labour) and other relevant national stakeholders to involve them in the initiative
- to consider uses for data collected and possible outcomes (such as awareness raising, national regulatory action, or notification of a severely hazardous pesticide formulation to the PIC secretariat), taking into consideration input and comments from the national workshop/meeting
- to visit the identified community/communities and their local health centres, present the proposed strategy, and prepare for the community training and health monitoring to take place in 2007
- to provide reports based on feedback from the DNA and NGOs and the result of the national seminar/meeting and field visits covering survey strategy, tools of self-surveillance, survey areas, strategies for using survey results, timetable and work plan
- provide a consolidated report in English and proposed approach for implementation in 2007; the report will be made available to selected DNAs in each region to encourage their interest and observations on the approach
