PAN UKs Objectives

• Eliminate the hazards of pesticidesalt

• Reduce dependence on pesticides

• Promote ecologically sound alternatives to chemical pest control

PAN UK works at several levels:

a) Focusing on the UK and Europe:

Agriculture and food policy: representation on government bodies and influencing policies, including strategies to reduce overall pesticide use, risks and dependence and promote Integrated Pest Management.

Home, garden and amenity pesticide use: gardening tips for allotment holders, work with local  authorities on reducing pesticide use in public spaces, and web-based details of how and where to dispose of home and garden use pesticides.

Individuals affected by pesticide exposure: providing an information service, including a newsletter for mutual support and information, collection of case studies and campaigning to make more explicit the health risks of pesticide use.

alt

b) With an international focus:

From field to fashion: working with the poorest farmers in Africa in converting to organic cotton production, and activities (especially with fashion students) to raise consumer awareness and demand for organic textile products.

Obsolete pesticides: working with the Africa Stockpiles Programme to promote disposal of obsolete pesticide stocks which exist in all sub-Saharan countries; PAN UK’s role is in training local NGOs, and promoting sustainable agricultural strategies. alt

Retail supply chains: influencing supermarkets and certification schemes to ensure phase-out of the most problematic pesticides and support for farmers to shift to safer alternatives, particularly in cotton, coffee and vegetables.

International regulation: bringing information from developing countries to influence the international agenda on pesticide regulation, through training in the monitoring of pesticide impacts on communities’ health and the local environment, in collaboration with PAN Africa
c) Outreach activities Awareness raising: a widely accessed website; our quarterly journal, Pesticides News; dissemination of peer-reviewed research through Current Research Monitor and its related web-based research site www.pesticidelibrary.org; and a service to answer queries from the press and public. PAN UK also runs the annual Rachel Carson Memorial Lecture
