Lethal traps. For these to work effectively it is important to experiment with different baits e.g. fruit and nut chocolate, tuna fish. Placement of the traps it also important. Mice will run around the edge of a room near to the skirting board but can easily become trap shy. Traps will be most effective if they are located inside tunnels (so trap-shy mice cannot side-step the trap) and placed directly against the wall. They can be purchased already inside tunnels from

Live traps should be monitored at least twice a day and mice removed as soon as they are trapped to avoid distress.

Home made live trap

You can make your own live mouse trap by using a milk bottle, preferably one with very curved sides.  Place the bottle parallel to the wall at a 45 degree angle using a cardboard box or similar for support and construct a ramp leading up to the neck of the bottle, this may be made of cardboard, wood or whatever you have to hand.  Bait the bottle with bits of crumbled up chocolate biscuit. Leave overnight.  It works quite simply by the mouse detecting the food in the bottle going up the ramp and down into the bottle. Once in the bottle the steep sides prevent it from getting. It is essential that live traps are monitored regularly.
