The Permanent Peoples' Tribunal on Industrial Hazards and Human Rights

An international session of the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal (PPT) on Industrial Hazards and Human Rights was convened in London and hosted by The Pesticides Trust [now PAN UK] from 28 November to 2 December 1994 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Bhopal pesticide disaster: A panel of six eminent judges heard evidence from community groups, victims' organizations and experts and announced that "In the course of voluminous evidence presented to the Tribunal it became apparent that acute industrial accidents and  more pervasive industrial pollution in the South demonstrate a pattern of corporate, governmental and international negligence, irresponsibility and indifference toward basic human rights."

Pesticide production in the South Linking production and trade 7
The production of the active ingredients for pesticides is located substantially in the North, mainly in Europe and the United States. Japanese production is growing fast. However, production of active ingredients whose trade mark has expired is now increasing in both the newly-industrialised countries of Taiwan and South Korea, and in a number of countries in the South particularly Brazil and China. Barbara Dinham looks at these trends, and the questions they raise.

Cooperation on sustainable cotton production

Working with Pesticide Action Network partners, the cotton cooperation project aims to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture in the South by addressing the problems faced by small farmers dependent on cotton for cash. The objective is to support efforts to develop organic cotton production as an integral part of agro-ecological farming systems. Research and advocacy, networking and capacity building are also part of the project. Dorothy Myers reports on two recent 'sustainable cotton' initiatives.

Reducing pesticide contamination of water: a farming view   14
This paper briefly outlines some of the practical aspects of controlling pesticide contamination and examines the potential of buffer zones for this purpose. It was presented by Dr Christopher Wise of the UK's National Farmers Union (NFU) at a recent water conference organised by BICS International.
