Pesticides News
32 covers a range of internationally import issues. Alemayehu Wodageneh and
Harry van der Wulp look at the increasing problem of obsolete pesticides. The
Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) has led attempts to dispose of
accumulated stocks of obsolete pesticides, many of which are highly persistent
organochlorines targeted for international action. A progress report on this
action is also included in this issue. Mary Matheson tells of the health
problems associated with pesticide use in the flower trade in Colombia.
At the same time, latest trade figures show that global
pesticide use is increasing—at the highest levels seen for some years. This
comes at a time when there is some much interest in decided what is sustainable
agriculture, and what it integrated farming, and will they lead to a decrease in
pesticides use? Jules Pretty, Patricia Matteson and Jet Proost provide some
answers to these questions.
