Multiproblem Chemicals in Sweden
KEMI,
the Swedish National Chemicals Inspectorate has identified 100 'multiproblem
chemicals', including some pesticides. The list will help the government make
strategic decisions, such as ways of reducing associated risks. “This will
probably involve phase-outs and voluntary agreements with industry to use
alternative technology of products” according to Stefan Jabring of KEMI.
By using information from many internationally available
databases, chemicals were coarsely ranked according to their properties and
exposure potential, in terms of hazard to human health and the environment. It
is not intended to be a rigorous list, but an indicator of hazard. Scores were
given for 18 parameters: seven on environmental hazards; eight on health hazard
and three relating to exposure potential. Where data differed, the worse case
was chosen.
