On 30 June the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received a request from Amvac Chemical Corporation, the sole registrant, to stop the sale or production of the insecticide mevinphos. The move came after the EPA and California Department of Pesticide Regulation planned actions to remove mevinphos from the market. Mevinphos is one of the most toxic pesticides registered in the US and is associated with far more reported illnesses than any of its alternatives. In 1993 the EPA placed mevinphos in the top five of pesticides posing potentially high risks to agricultural workers.
