New from the Pesticides Trust [now PAN UK] – a unique overview of organic cotton

Organic cotton production is becoming a viable alternative to conventional production, which is heavily dependent on synthetic chemical inputs. “There are problems with pesticides which need great care,” said a Senegalese farmer “I have always loved insects and tried to protect them so I was not difficult to convince … I have tried both kinds of farming and I prefer organic.”
The Pesticides Trust has produced this first comprehensive overview of organic cotton. Chapters cover problems with conventional cotton production, technical aspects of conversion to organic, frameworks for change, organic cotton processing, certification, standards and labelling and the economics of new systems.  Case studies are drawn from all countries with significant organic cotton production, including the US, Egypt, India, Peru and Turkey, as well as several new projects in Africa. The appendix carries the new IFOAM Organic Textile Processing Standards.
