Green Flag Parks rise again!
Yet again the number of parks awarded Green Flag Park Awards has risen dramatically with 54 parks and open spaces judged good enough to fly the prestigious Flag. This is the fourth year of the scheme that was created by PAN UK in partnership with the Institute for Leisure and Amenity Management, English Nature and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. The scheme is now managed by the Civic Trust, which is also a partner in the scheme.
Parks applying for an Award are judged against a set of criteria that covers sound environmental management (including evidence of pesticide elimination or reduction), strong community involvement, high standards of landscape and horticultural design and maintenance and high standards of safety, cleanliness and accessibility.
This year the Awards have grown in status as well as number, with strong commendations from the House of Commons Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee and the government on the role of Green Flag Park Awards in raising the standard of public parks. The scheme, that grew out of the PAN UK Local Authorities Project to advise councils on ways of eliminating or reducing their pesticide use, is now acknowledged by professionals and policy makers as setting the standard to which all parks should aspire and by which they should all be judged.
The Awards will be presented this year at a ceremony on 12 October hosted by Stockport Council whose parks have attained three Awards.
