Re-approval of chlorpyrifos in Europe
Chlorpyrifos is one of the active substances included in the first stage of the review referred in Directive 91/414/EEC, regarding the placement of Plant Protection Products (PPPs) in the market. After the notification was presented, a rapporteur Member-State was designated (in this case Spain) and examined all the information submitted by the Company interested in marketing the product. A closed consultation with experts including industry people followed and some additional studies were carried out before a draft review report has been presented. Finally, the re-approval was decided in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) of 2-3 June 2005, subject to approval by the European Commission and publication in the official journal. The decision is a political decision and not a decision on scientific grounds. Even (cut-off) criteria are still lacking.
