Pesticide Action Network UK welcomes the convictions of eight Indian former senior executives of Union Carbide over the poisonous gas leak at Bhopal in 1984. But is disappointed at the length of the sentences and the fact that none of the company’s US management has been held accountable.“Twenty-five years is a long time to wait for justice, and two years is a derisory sentence when over 20,000 people died as a result of the leak” said Dr Keith Tyrell, Director of PAN UK. “Many of those who survived that night have received a life sentence of illness and suffering because of the negligence that led to the leak that night,” he said. “Tens of thousands more still live with the toxic legacy today because of the failure of Union Carbide, and the Government of Madhya Pradesh to adequately clean up the site. Contamination of the water supplies by leaching chemicals has been linked to an epidemic of cancers, kidney disease and birth defects.” “It is shameful that the US executives responsible for this disaster have got off scot free while tens of thousands of men women and children continue to suffer" |
