On the 60th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s game-changing book ‘Silent Spring’ we bring together three incredible speakers who have spent years working to expose the corruption, corporate greenwashing and PR spin deployed by the agrochemical industry. Together, we will examine the industry’s treatment of Rachel Carson 60 years ago and compare the tactics, manipulation and psychology used today.

Carey Gillam

Carey Gillam is a veteran investigative journalist with more than 30 years of experience covering corporate news, including 17 years as a senior correspondent with Reuters international news service (1998-2015). She is the author of Whitewash- The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science, an expose of corporate corruption in agriculture. The book won the coveted Rachel Carson Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists in 2018. Her second book, a narrative legal thriller titled The Monsanto Papers, was released March 2021. Gillam is managing editor of The New Lede, a journalism initiative of the Environmental Working Group.

Jennifer Jacquet

Jennifer Jacquet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Director of XE: Experimental Humanities and Social Engagement at NYU. She is also deputy director of NYU’s Center for Environmental and Animal Protection. She is author of the new book The Playbook: How to Deny Science, Sell Lies and Make a Killing in the Corporate World – a work of experimental non-fiction that makes the business case for scientific denial. She is the recipient of a 2015 Alfred P. Sloan research fellowship and a 2016 Pew fellowship in marine conservation.

Anna Lappe

Anna Lappé is a bestselling author, advocate for sustainability and justice along the food chain, and funder for food systems transformation. Since 2016, she has developed and led the Food Sovereignty Fund of the Panta Rhea Foundation. She is also the founder and strategic advisor to Real Food Media, which works with food movement partners around the world to develop media and communications strategy. A national bestselling author, Anna has authored or co-authored three books and is the contributing author to fourteen more, including Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It.
