Strategy to 2030
For 40 years, PAN UK has tackled the harms of chemical pesticides in the UK and globally, using scientific evidence, a network of national and international allies, and stubborn determination to confront the pesticide industry head on. In this anniversary year, we are pleased to launch our new Strategy to 2030.
The last five years have been a particularly successful period in PAN UK’s history. Alongside major policy wins both here in the UK and internationally and with increasing reach and impact of our programmes we have also seen an increase in income and staff team.
Despite these positive developments, the threats to human health and the environment from an ever-growing range of highly hazardous pesticides remain. 60 years since Rachel Carson alerted the world to the dangers of chemical intensive agriculture, pesticide use continues to grow. Globally, pesticide use has increased over the last decade by 20%. However, this masks an even more worrying trend that has seen use grow by 153% in low- and middle-income countries.
At PAN UK we know how important the next 10 years will be as we fight the threats from the intersecting challenges of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Our new strategy commits PAN UK to redouble its efforts to protect human health and the environment from the harms of pesticides and play our part in averting these triple planetary crises.
Building on the successes of the last five years and using our organisational strength we have developed five ambitions that will guide our actions over the next four years.
By 2030…
- The harms caused by pesticides to the environment and human health will be more widely understood.
- The toxic burden of pesticides globally will be reduced.
- The conditions necessary for the rapid expansion of agroecological production will be in place.
- Public & private environmental agriculture initiatives will include measures that monitor and drive reductions in pesticide use and harms.
- Regulatory systems will prioritise public good over vested interests
PAN UK’s vision is for people and nature to thrive in a world free from the harms of pesticides. This new Strategy to 2030 creates the framework for us to make great strides towards this ultimate goal over the coming years.
